Griffiths Member Receives Volunteerism Award
After graduating with two degrees from Mizzou, Melodie has served the Mizzou Alumni Association for more than 20 years. Of those 20 years, nearly all of them were spent in key leadership positions. At the local level Melodie has served as the President of the Cole County Chapter, Vice Chair of the Kansas City Chapter, Chair of the Kansas City Scholarship Committee, Chair of the Kansas City Student Recruitment Committee and given countless hours and personal donations to K.C’s two premier fundraising events, the KC Picnic and the KC Tiger Ball. At the National Level Melodie has served as a Member on the Mizzou Legislative Committee. She has chaired the Rules Committee and the Board nominating committee. She assumed the most time intensive and highest volunteer role in our organization in the year 2000 when she served as the MAA International Board President. During her term as President she initiated and chaired a committee which developed a long range plan for the MAA that still serves us today. Most recently, she co-founded the Griffiths Leadership Society, serves on the Leadership Development Committee and is active with the Past President’s Council. Campus-wide Melodie has been tapped into two of the most prestigious honor organizations on our campus, QEBH and Mortar Board. She also serves on the Arts & Science Strategic Development Board. She is a Jefferson Club Distinguished Fellow and serves as the MAA representative on the Strategic Planning Resource Advisory Board for the entire campus. One of her many supporters had this to say about Melodie, “She is an amazing leader, a dedicated volunteer, a role model to many colleagues and students, and a Tiger to the bone! We are here tonight to thank Melodie for her work promoting, growing and leading Mizzou. Mizzou is one of the top Universities in the country in part because we have alumni like Melodie Powell.” The Association was honored to recognize Melodie Powell with the 2007 Missouri PRIDE award.
