Plan the Work…Work the Plan
This phrase seems to sum up the successful mentor/mentee experiences of these five Griffiths Leadership Society members: mentor Vicky Riback Wilson and mentee Lauren Carter, and mentor Michelle Gibler and mentees Maggie Schlarman and Emily Spradling.
The essence of their rapport amounts to maintaining contact and knowing what each expects from the other in their roles. When asked about their experiences, the women emphasized:
* planning the next meeting/communication
* keeping in contact
* being open to new experiences and ideas
* seizing the opportunity to get to know one of the versatile women from Griffiths—not just as a professional but as a person.
Alumna Carol Hurt and collegian Emily Roxberg.
All five women said the Griffiths conferences are a springboard to interactions throughtout the year—whether in person or electronically.
“Griffiths has really helped me get to know other successful women and has helped me start building my own network,” Maggie said. “When you put effort into this Society, you gain so much back!”
Since the women are all in the Columbia area, they meet several times during the year. But regular emails along with Facebook and other social networking sites serve as vehicles for getting better acquainted and allow sharing of personal joys and challenges as well as professional progress.
“As a senior approaching graduation in May, my relationship with Vicky has proved quite valuable in helping guide my post-graduation plans as well as increase my network of progressive women in the mid-Missouri area,” Lauren said.
According to Emily, “I truly believe that the Griffith’s Leadership Society, more than any of my other extracurricular activities, has had the greatest impact on my life here at Mizzou. She’s not only my mentor, but I’ve found a great friend.”
Professional and personal experiences are broadened when each member branches out into the area of interest of her counterpart. They all agree that the mutual satisfaction from sharing experiences is worth any effort that it takes because their lives are enriched through their combined experiences.
Vicky urges everyone to get to know “the wonderful women of Griffiths.”
