Spirit of Martha Award Nominations Available

Applications are now available for the 2011 Spirit of Martha Award. The award recognizes MU women who have distinguished themsevles in their chosen profession and exemplify the spirit of leadership, particularly in the furtherance of women.

The award is named in honor of Martha Wright Griffiths, a 1934 MU economics graudate who served ten terms in Congress and was later elected as the first female lieutenant governor of the state of Michigan. Martha is remembered as the woman most responsible for including women in the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and for influencing the ERA movement more than any woman in the modern era. It is in her memory and spirit in which this award is given.

Past recipients include Dr. Pam Benoit, Vice President and Provost at Ohio University; Bekki Cook, former Missouri Secretary of State; Cindy Mustard, director of the Voluntary Action Center; and Linda Remmele Evans, former director of the Missouri Division of Judicial Education.
